The Cut: What Made It and What Didn't — May 2022

Yet another insanely busy month delayed May's roundup, but I'm here and ready to discuss the products I was using, wearing, and loving. From makeup to clothes, we have a few things to talk about this time.

Made the Cut

Sanrio Pochacco Summer Floral Crewneck

BoxLunch is an extremely dangerous place for my wallet. If you've never been to one, they're basically like a less "edgy" Hot Topic (and is owned by Hot Topic) without any of the music-related merchandise or clothing and entirely focused on exclusive, licensed pop culture goods.

Between the gaming, Sanrio, and Sailor Moon stuff they carry, I have to be really careful not to go too crazy in there. But it's going to be next to impossible to get me to ignore a cute Sanrio sweatshirt, especially with one of my favorite characters (favorite status goes to Keroppi). I picked up BoxLunch's Sanrio Pochacco Summer Floral Crewneck ($44.90) while I was shopping for gifts for someone else and am so glad I did. It's really nice quality and a fun alternative to my usual neutrals and understated patterns. It's also always nice to get merchandise featuring one of the Hapidanbui boys (I can't tell you how far my jaw dropped when I discovered that all of my favorite Sanrio characters are in one group now).

Glossier Lavender Balm Dot Com

Another day, another flavor of Glossier's Balm Dot Com. This time, very-on-trend lavender ($12) has been introduced to the family of balms and it's wonderful. I love the scent, the color scheme of the tube and cap, and the slight lavender sheen it gives the lips. (Don't worry, it's nothing crazy or over the top.) Not much to say here because if you've tried one of these, you've essentially tried them all (at least when it comes to the formula), and at this point I'm sure many of you have already tried at least one of Glossier's much-loved lip product. But if you love the scent of lavender (with a very subtle touch of honeyed sweetness), this one's for you.

Popkiller Artist Series Warakami Vaporwave No Classic T-Shirt | Natural

I have a weakness for a good graphic tee, but's much easier to recognize "good" when I see it than to try and describe it. I just knew when I saw this one that it was right up my alley. I really like the vaporwave/80s/90s aesthetic a lot, but some of it can be kind of lazy or generic when translated to clothing or prints. I liked Warakami's Vaporwave No tee ($29.80) because it has a cool vibe and a unique design. This shirt is really thick, too, which I appreciate. If you like graphic tees and especially unique or interesting prints, check out Popkiller. I've found some cool shirts on their site over the years.

Physician's Formula Matte Monoi Butter Bronzer + Butter Blush

As I've mentioned in previous editions of The Cut, I love good drug store makeup, and Physician's Formula has really solid products. I use their Murumuru Butter Bronzer and Blush, so I was really intrigued when I was in Walmart and came across their Matte Monoi line. I picked up the Matte Monoi Butter Bronzer in Matte Bronzer ($16.49) and Matte Monoi Butter Blush in Mauvey Mattes ($12.99) on a whim and ended up liking both a lot. I was worried the blush might wind up looking kind of weird, because it's multicolored, but I just dab my powder brush around the pan, tap off the excess, and wind up with a really nice, flattering pinky nude color that doesn't look clownish. The bronzer doesn't pull orange on my skin and gives a nice bit of warmth. If you want a more matte look than the Murumuru Butter Bronzer and Blush, give the Matte Monoi line a try.

Didn't Make the Cut

Nothing!

This was yet another month where nothing wound up being a dud, which is great because it feels like money well spent. No one likes trying something new and feeling like they just threw money down the toilet.

Be sure to check back next month for another round of products that made the cut and didn't, and thanks for reading my monthly series, The Cut.
